NICHOLAS MOEDE

Exploring human complexity and fragility—through stories, mountains, and the choices we make.

My Story

Nicholas Moede skiing in Greenland

I’m a lifelong mountaineer and backcountry skier, drawn to the mountains not just for their beauty, but for the lessons they teach. My passion began with my grandfather, a Swiss mountaineer and skier. For the past five years, I’ve served as a mountain rescuer, responding to accidents and emergencies in challenging terrain. As a winter mountaineering instructor, I’ve had the privilege of teaching skills that can mean the difference between a safe return and tragedy. Adventure has always guided me, but my experiences have shown me the limits of human ambition—and the fragility of life.

I've come to learn that errors in thinking play a major role in most mountain accidents. These cognitive biases cloud judgment and lead even the most experienced climbers into danger. After analyzing hundreds of accidents, I’ve made it my mission to help others recognize and avoid these mental pitfalls. I developed a course focused on practical decision-making tools that mountaineers can use when it matters most. My upcoming book, set to be published in late 2025, explores the complexities of human decision-making in the mountains, blending real-life stories with strategies to help people make smarter, safer choices.
